Основана в 1917 как "Юнион карбайд энд карбон" [Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation], поглотив ранее существовавшие фирмы. 3 декабря 1984 утечка газа на предприятии компании в индийском городе Бхопале стала причиной гибели до 2,5 тыс. человек; по разным данным, от аварии пострадали от 50 до 200 тыс. людей.
